Seasons Offers Bereavement Support to Children in California

CAMP KANGAROO OFFERS BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT TO CHILDREN WHO HAVE LOST A LOVED ONE

San Juan Capistrano, CA—(May 11, 2016) Camp Kangaroo, a free three-day bereavement program offered through Seasons Hospice Foundation and Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care, helps five-to-14-year-old children who have lost a loved one learn new coping skills. The camp will take place from Friday, May 13 through Sunday, May 15 at the Lazy W Ranch, 23852 Hot Spring Canyon Rd, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675.

Each day of camp consists of a combination of fun activities and grief therapy sessions. Camp goals are achieved using a variety of proven bereavement therapy methods. In addition to meeting the personalized goals of each camper, Camp Kangaroo has four major goals:

  • Educate campers about what grief is and provide outlets for them to express their grief.
  • Share education about death and dying.
  • Provide peer support by connecting campers with others going through a similar experience.
  • Help children honor their lost loved one and begin to move forward through their grief.

“Even for us as adults, grieving is very difficult and not something that we learn,” said Ryana Goldberger, National Director of Supportive Care & Patient Experience for Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care.  “Adults are not the best at explaining things to children, and they can get confused by what parents say, even though they are well-meaning and trying to protect their child. Kids go through the camp, and our clinicians help to draw things out and assist them in better learning how to process, move on and celebrate.”

While some grief camps focus on peer support, Camp Kangaroo is the only psychotherapy and creative arts therapy camp with a clinical approach to grief. Camp staff meet with each camper at their home before the event to develop personalized strategies to help them through the grieving process. Camp Kangaroo will host over 60 campers at Lazy W Ranch, which will provide a calm and distraction-free environment.

Camp Kangaroo was made possible by the generous support of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, Apex Infusion, ACL Construction, and Abundant Homecare. In-kind contributions of food and supplies were made by many local restaurants and retail establishments.
