Touch for All Seasons Programs Renamed to Namaste Care

ROSEMONT (December 15, 2015) – Beginning in November, Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care officially changed the name of their Touch for All Seasons Program to Namaste Care.  Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care developed this highly specialized program for people in the advanced stages of dementia and other neurological illnesses. Namaste Care was designed by Joyce Simard, MSW, an internationally recognized dementia expert. Namaste Care uses person-centered approaches to improve quality of life through meaningful sensory activities that stimulate the senses, promote relaxation, and offer comfort and serenity to those living with dementia. Although specifically designed for people with advanced dementia, the sensory approaches used in Namaste Care enhance the lives of infants, children and people with other diseases as well as providing moments of peace and tranquility to family caregivers.

“I developed Namaste Care when I realized that residents in nursing facilities and assisted living communities could no longer participate in traditional activities,” said Joyce Simard, MSW. “They were often isolated and I believed they  should have an opportunity to continue engaging in meaningful activities offered with a loving touch approach.  When Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care asked me to adapt my program for their patients with advanced dementia,  I was impressed that they recognized these patients had special needs unlike the typical cancer patient who could still verbalize their feelings.  Seasons agreed to my only request and that was to develop Namaste Care with integrity.  They have never failed to meet this request and are the only national hospice organization to offer Namaste Care.”

Namaste Care approaches are provided by all members of the hospice interdisciplinary staff and volunteers. Seasons certified nurse assistants provide bathing, dressing, grooming and hydration as meaningful activities rather than task completion. Other disciplines and volunteers are involved with providing gentle hand massages, spiritual reading, music and reminiscence. Seasons Hospice promises that with Namaste Care, each person's individuality is respected, approach to care is offered to maximize pleasure and comfort, and all care by all staff and volunteers is offered with a loving touch.
